So you're the host for the next event — that's great! Here are a few important things to remember.
Before the event:
Announce the event. People won't know if you don't tell them. Make sure to announce the event well ahead of time — a good rule of thumb is 10 days before the event.
Send reminders. People will forget if you don't remind them. Make sure you remind them about the event — a good rule of thumb is 5 days before the event, and again the day before the event.
Things you should make sure are available:
Cube(s). There's no cube community without a cube. Check the registration system to see how many people are attending, and make sure there are enough cubes available for everyone to play. You're not expected to own a cube — if you don't, coordinate with others in the community. No matter who's bringing the cube, make sure they have gone through the Cube Owner Guide.
Food and drinks. Think of these events as parties — and what kind of party doesn't have refreshments? You're not expected to provide them yourself, but you should make sure people have access to them.
Cleaning products. Not everyone will bring a play mat, so you’ll want to make sure the tables are clean. Sometimes, that means cleaning them yourself.
On the day of the event:
Show up! As the host, people are counting on you to be there. This isn’t the time for a last-minute change of plans.
Be on time. Arriving on time (or even a bit early) shows reliability and gives you a chance to set up and welcome people.
Be visible. Make sure you’re easy to spot — just throw some Magic products on the table, and people will figure it out.
Be welcoming. Bring your smile and your patience. Make people feel at home — not just attendees, but also curious passersby. They might become the next members of your community!
Check the WhatsApp group (until the draft starts). Someone might be late, or lost — or both. Check the group occasionally to stay on top of things.
Manage time. This includes starting the event on time and setting timers for rounds. A 60-minute timer is a generous window that allows most matches to finish comfortably.
Manage the tournament structure. Cube is a casual format, but people still want to see a winner! Decide on a tournament structure and help ensure it runs smoothly. The MTG Companion App can be a great tool for this.
Stick around until the end! Your matches might be over, but your job isn’t done yet. Stay until the event has properly wrapped up, and make sure everything is in order.
Enjoy! Hosting an event is a very special thing, have fun with it!
